Mister Death by jarling-art Mister Death by jarling-art
I decided to not work on any commissions over Easter to relax a little. What could be better to relax a little from painting than painting, haha. Well I opened a test render I did for a earlier work from me (timemachine) and just wanted to try some brushes in Photoshop, those who know me will know usually paint using Painter. I already did another piece (lost in space) using only photoshop for the painting process and I was extremely amazed by the result I got with some custom made Photoshop brushes. To make a long sentence short, this is my second attempt to use only Photoshop for painting and what shall I say, I like the result a lot, I got again a very nice painterly look. After years using only Painter for painting I’m fascinated by the control I have with the Photoshop brushes, I sure will use Painter in future as well for my digital paintings as there are still some things I can only do in Painter. BUT I definitely will use Photoshop for my digital paintings more and more.

However what you see above is the result of my playing around with Photoshop brushes, I really just wanted to play around a little but finally I had the finished painting you see above. The whole procedure took me the whole Easter Monday minus the time I spent for eating sweets and Easter eggs :-).
Now I would love to know what you think about the piece, do you think Photoshop works for me or should I better go back and use Painter again, I’m really unsure about what to do, so give me your thoughts…

Thank you all so much for taking your time and looking at my stuff
-Uwe

Looks great.

Have heard of people who use Painter and photoshop in their workflow so its not like you have to choose one over the other.

Is it possible to use one app for certain things and move to the other one for other things?

I'll gladly give my thoughts.

First of :+fav: ..
secondly, I don't know painter, I myself use photoshop, and am highly addicted to it.
I think you're doing extremely well with photoshop , and should continue fiddling with it to gain full experience.

have you tried messing around with the layers?
do you even create layers when using photoshop?
when using layers, you can change the way a colour appears by adjusting it from normal, to hue, to overlay etc etc and get some pretty interesting effects.

just some helpful advice incase you haven't worked that part of adobe out yet since you like painter :)
cheers!

i really thought when i saw it you'd based it on painter's engine, but hell... if it's pure photoshop, they're starting to get the brush engine in good shape then. yay. haven't really tried painting on the cs3 engine at all yet. impressive work as always and the theme fits with me =)

Thanks for the comment, glad you like the piece. Well it was Photoshop CS as I don’t like CS2 and 3 too much as they changed the layers palette in a way I just don’t like so I still work on CS. Well in the agency I work we have to use CS3 but the brushes didn’t really change since CS, so there’s no need to update to CS3 just cause of the brushes, CS will do the trick as well ;-)

I think they worked on the brush engine for cs2 and 3, but haven't really been doing some heavy tests myself on it. Still i think the painter engine is a lot more robust and enduring for 'heavy' painting than the photoshop one. Last time i tried out was on a lot worse off machine than this one, and it didn't do that well with cs1, while it did do quite fine with painter. Along the way painters brush engine has been less memoryconsuming and whatnotz than photoshop, so i'll hope adobe will take up on that someday - because otherwise i love the controls in their apps.

Well I have to work with Photoshop each and every day at work, so I think I really master Photoshop more or less, I just didn’t use it for Painting.

I think that this is a wonderful example of the power of photoshop. I wouldn't say stick to just painter or photoshop, but alternate according to the mood or subject of your piece. Some days are meant for painter, and others photoshop. Really like this piece though. It's got a classic fantasy feel to it. :+fav:
