Another illustration for Call of Cthulhu. This one shows Azathoth himself, the greatest and most terrible of all the gods of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, so I wanted to do something really scary with lots of tentacles and stuff. Hope it worked somehow to do Azathoth at least a little justice. A step by step tutorial of this piece will appear in Martin McKenna’s digital horror painting workshop which will be out late summer 2006.

I'll be a fanboy first and say that Lovecraft himself never established greater or lesser deities in his mythos and has no good or evil either. It was only later when his work was added to by others that all that nonesense about good and evil cultists and this god is more evil than that god.

On the other hand, HOLY CRAP!!!!! This is fantastic! A truely awesome depiction of horror! The atom bomb imagery is a nice touch, as is the disembodyment of the creature, more an abstract being than a singular entity. The tentacles coming out of the eyes is pretty disturbing too. Now, my question is, what are all those people doing in such a cyclopean looking city?

This picture is amazing. The colors and details are spectacular. I especially like the tentacle ripping through the woman's chest. So on a scale of 1 to 10, that little detail would be a 12 while everything else is an 11. :)
